The importance of vaccines cannot be underestimated. Free vaccination programs are funded by the government to protect infants and children against 14 diseases. From their birth to six years old, children are offered shots for chickenpox (varicella), diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), influenza, measles, meningococcal, mumps, pertussis (whooping cough), pneumococcal, polio, rotavirus, rubella, and tetanus. Parents and guardians should take note of the vaccine schedule designated for each child. An immunization schedule is usually provided to help parents keep track of their child’s vaccine checklist. They can start as early as two (2) months of age, and the other vaccine schedules are distributed according to the child’s age. When a child has chronic conditions, additional vaccines or additional dosage may be recommended.
Vaccinations are available in your local health unit, from your family doctor, or your trusted pharmacy. It is normal to have questions about vaccines. Do not hesitate to ask your healthcare provider for more details.
